A few weeks ago we outlined some of our favorite causes to support this October. Today we're shining the spotlight on one awareness event in particular:  National Dental Hygiene Month (NDHM).  The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) has partnered up with Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, which manufactures Orbit gum, to bring NDHM to Americans.

According to the ADHA, "This year’s collaboration will continue to improve on last year’s new NDHM format by providing even more focus on consumer information about oral disease prevention, focusing on community service and the day-to-day efforts of dental hygienists nationwide." Dental hygienists are important because they help us prevent oral disease by "focusing on techniques in oral hygiene," reports Wikipedia.

The campaign's theme this year focuses on simplicity:  "It's simple.  Healthy habits for a healthy smile."  If you'd like to help to spread awareness about the annual event, you'll find dozens of printed Dental Hygiene Month products that are sure to help get your message across.  You can help reiterate the importance of a simple oral health regimen by giving out promo tooth-shaped dental floss, for example.

What's most important is to remind audiences that you can fit a great dental hygiene routine into even the busiest of lifestyles. If you're looking for a quick way to promote NDHM, feel free to browse the ADHA's Web site for oral health tips, instructions on brushing and flossing effectively, and how to prevent potential problems.  There are even downloadable posters and Spanish language materials that will help you appeal to a broad audience.

Below is an outline of the tips the ADHA offers:

• Brush twice daily for at least two minutes
• Floss every day
• Don't forget to use mouthwash
• After each meal, chew a piece of sugar-free gum

It's that simple! Spread the word about NDHM and everyone will soon see how easy it is to keep teeth white and gums happy.
